AEO explained
Answer Engine Optimization, without the hype.
A practical primer for teams who need to explain this work internally — and then do it.

The discipline
What AEO actually is
SEO wins you the right to be considered. AEO decides whether you are understood, cited and recommended once a model is considering sources.
Answer engines do not show a ranked list and leave the judgement to the user. They synthesise an answer from multiple sources and present it as a finished response. That changes the economics of visibility: a brand that is absent from the synthesis is absent from the experience, even if it ranks on a traditional results page that fewer people ever see.
AEO is the practice of preparing your brand, its entities and its content for that moment — making the facts models need legible, the evidence strong, and the recommendation natural.
Under the hood
How an answer engine decides
Understanding the pipeline makes the fixes obvious. Every AEO recommendation maps back to one of these three stages.
01
Interpret the question
The model parses intent, entities and constraints — and decides which sources are likely to be relevant before it has read a single page.
02
Retrieve and evaluate
Candidate pages are retrieved and scored for relevance, authority, recency and clarity. This is where technical and content signals earn their keep.
03
Synthesise and attribute
An answer is composed from the strongest sources — and the sources named in it become your citations. Attribution is the visibility you can actually measure.
Signals
The levers you can actually pull
These are the components AuthorityOS weights into an explainable AEO score — each one traceable to a fix.
Content Answerability
Pages that answer a question directly, concisely and self-contained are dramatically easier for a model to quote.
Entity Clarity
Consistent organisation, product, person and place signals help models identify who you are, what you do and how you relate to a topic.
Technical Readiness
Crawlability, canonicals, redirects, sitemaps and rendering determine whether your content can be retrieved at all.
Structured Data
Machine-readable facts, usually JSON-LD, state relationships explicitly so models do not have to infer them.
Topic Coverage
Breadth and depth across the questions your market asks makes you a plausible source for more answers.
Citation Readiness
Evidence quality, source freshness and internal linking determine whether your pages get named as the source.

Positioning
SEO, AEO and GEO — where the lines fall
Three disciplines, one pipeline. The table below shows what each one owns.
| Dimension | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary output | Ranked links | Citations and recommendations | Presence in generated answers |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks, impressions | Answer share, citation rate, mention rate | Share in generative surfaces |
| Core levers | Keywords, links, technical SEO | Answerability, entities, evidence | Optimising for generated summarisation |
| Failure mode | You rank but nobody clicks | You are considered but never named | You are excluded from the synthesis |
| Relationship | Foundation | Built on SEO | A subset of AEO |
Getting started
Where to start this week
AEO rewards measurement before action. You cannot prioritise fixes until you know which prompts you are missing.
- 01Define the questions your customers actually ask — your prompt universe.
- 02Establish a baseline for presence, citations and competitors across those prompts.
- 03Fix technical and entity signals that block interpretation.
- 04Restructure priority pages to answer directly and cite evidence.
- 05Measure share of answers over 30 and 90 day windows, and iterate.
In practice
What changes when you run AEO properly
Teams that treat AEO as a measured programme rather than a checklist see the same pattern repeated.
From tracking rankings to tracking answers
Instead of asking 'did we move on page two?', the question becomes 'are we named in the answers our customers receive?' — and that is a number leadership can follow.
- A defined prompt universe replaces guesswork about what matters
- Every metric is labelled by source and traceable to a fix
- Competitor share turns anecdote into a monitored comparison
